Garcinia Indica.. Kokum, Amsur, Punarpuli, etc..Indica as the name suggests is a medicinal tree originally from India found mostly in the southern and western belts of India, also widely used in Assam. A very hardy tough tree with zero care requirement by way of watering, manuring or pesticide, but highly used in our culinary, cosmetic and medical field. It brings tartness to our dishes and is used in cooking, for making cooling summer drinks, solkadis as well as kokum butter (derived from the seeds) a plant based extract which is used in cooking, making choclates and in the cosmetic industry. Medically Ayurveda uses Kokum in weight loss, curing acidity, as coolant in summers, excellent for heart, curing diabetes and blood pressure, digestive and skin ailments, etc. Kokum is also used in healing anxiety and depression by healing frayed nerves. Adding fresh kokum in season and dried kokum rest of year in our diet will give immense benefits.
