*Successful Seed saving techniques*
In continuation with tips given on seeds saving given on Friday:
Generally flowers have *Dry seeds* whereas vegetables and fruits seeds can be both *Dry and Wet seeds*
*Wet seeds* like in tomato, cucumber, yellow cucumber (Madras kakdi), papaya, egg plant, guavas, etc come with a pulp enclosed around the seeds which is called “seed inhibitor” which prevents the seed to germinate within the vegetable/fruit.
One way to remove it is put the seeds in a container and put double the water into it. Viable seeds will sink in with the pulp around it. Non viable seeds that float should be discarded. The healthy seeds below need to be gently rubbed and stirred to release the pulp around it and rinsed properly. This should then be made completely dry and stored away in air tight containers in cool, dark and dry places.
Another way to separate the pulp from the seeds is soak it in water for 3-4 days. A mold will form on top and that should be rinsed off with the now separated pulp residue and the seeds stored as above.
While storing in cool dark places of the house away from sun as well as temperature fluctuations. To be stored in fridge/freezer for relative long periods, complete dry seeds is a must otherwise the seeds will turn moldy. Quick and complete drying of seed is important for seed saving.
