Poll: Are lawns eco-friendly?
Options: yes
no
Ans: No
When we weigh the pros and cons of lawn & its maintenance, having a lovely garden with biodiversity and full of life wins hands down. *As per global study, the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages of having a lawn.
Some points highlighted are:

1. Lawns need water guzzlers as they need regular watering, deweeding, fertilizing and maintenance making it an expensive proposition.
2. Whereas, comparatively, maintaining drought resistance flowering and food giving plants r low maintenance in same space.
3. Lawns r costly upkeep whereas perennial plants r self sustaining and low maintenance.
4. Lawns provide limited habitat value whereas plants with their diversity provide food for pollinators and also store rainwater.
5. In the US alone, 40 million acres r covered in lawns which offer little food or shelter to native insects, birds or improve soil life.
6. Lawns r dangerous monoculture whereas plants create native biodiversity.
7. Bcos of high levels of pesticides used in lawns, millions of birds r killed through ground and air pollution.
8. Lawns decrease soil microbes whereas plants will encourage our main silent workers like soil microbes, birds, native bees, butterflies earthworms, and the place will be alive with sound. This in turn will increase our food production.
So let us try to increase putting plants in available limited space to the benefit of all living kind instead of lawns. Lawns r luxury which we can’t afford due to shortage of pottable drinking water/recycled water which can be used for growing trees/plants with highest ecological value.
