There are many varieties of Halad and they are evaluated by their curcumin content. The best haldi available is the Lakadong Halad from Meghalaya with curcumin content of 8 to 10 percent. Next is the Alleppey Halad and so on. Amba Halad which has raw mango flavour is most used cosmetically as well as medicinally. Another type of Halad that is much valued medicinally is black turmeric (pic above) and is highly priced. Though it is used in our traditional medicines since very long, black turmeric is not used in cooking unlike other turmeric s. The leaves of black turmeric have distinctive black lines to differentiate it from other forms of turmeric. Generally Indians consume turmeric daily by use of same in their cooking. Halad has वुष्णा..heat generating ingredients so to be consumed in miniscule amounts.
