Often we hear Govts debating introduction of GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) in various disciplines including crop. Explaining in nutshell, these r biologically altered crops produced by introducing foreign genes into the plant which makes them disease/pest resistant thus giving higher yield, prolonged shelf life, etc to the crops.
And the justification for doing this is more food will be available for ever increasing population.
Cons of genetically modified crops r immense.
a. Nature biodiversity disappears
b. Allergic reactions and other serious ailments recorded.
c. Last, but most important is that these crops do not produce seeds bcos of genetical alteration, the entire farmer population around the world will be dependent on few global corporation for seeds which gives them immense power.
Many countries
worldwide have banned GMO/BT crops.
India is already producing BT cotton and trials r underway to produce more crops.
That is why it is important to have our indigenous seed bank of native crop to retain our biodiversity and renewable and multipliable capacity without dependence on international corporations for our survival.
Keeping this in mind and in line with the group’s focus and purpose, Hirva Swapna has started The Thane Natural wp group to preserve and propogate our native seeds, crops, fruits, etc grown naturally without chemicals of any sort. The link has been shared below. Please share it widely so that we can help our farmer members/shopkeepers who r selling natural chemical free produce and make this a mainstream market.
