Hedychium Coronarium…Ginger lily, Butterfly lily(bcos of its shape), Sontakka are some of the local names. It is a very fragrant, hardy, ornamental, minimum care flowering plant that can be easily multiplied by rhizomes. Each plant gives one set of inflorescence and can be cut down once the fragrance withers. As it needs moist soil it is to be planted where there is water retention. It likes good sun. It’s flowering season is through the rainy season i.e July to Oct. Does not require any manure, but small amount of manure be given during flowering season. The flowers are edible and used as garnish and widely used in perfumery and in ayurveda as well.
