Limonia Acidissima/limonia….local names Kavat, Kavit, Wood apple(even Bel is called so), elephant apple, etc. It is a tropical thorny slow growing tree that grows in arid and dry plains of India and has wood like thick shelled fruit hence called wood apple. It looks like a smaller version of Bel fruit, but of different genus/species. Bel fruit outer covering is smooth and shiny whereas Kavat fruit has rough and hard surface. Bael fruit is orange in colour, sweet smelling as well as in taste whereas Kavat fruit is brown chocolate in colour and sweet & sour in taste. Commercially it is used for pickling, squash, murrabha and chutney preparations. Medically in Ayurveda, its leaf, fruit, bark and root is used for heart ailments, diarrhoea, digestive and respiratory ailments, etc.
