In continuation with yday’s list of winter activities in garden, following tips and care help plant keep healthy :
The perennial tropical plants do go into dormancy around winter…so minimal watering to keep it alive should be done. Rest there should be no manuring, repotting, hard pruning to the plants.
But winter blooming plants (list fwded earlier) need all the sun, water, manuring through winter.
For tropical plants:
1. Watering only when the top 1 inch soil is fully dry as evaporation in winter is minimal and plant’s need for water is less.
2. No manuring till spring ie February as most plants r in dormancy in winter
3. Spray natural pesticides (already recorded in our website tip section for ready reference) on plants every fortnight esp on edible plants and plants prone to pest attack. Winter and monsoon seasons, most plants r prone to diseases bcos of retention of moisture and mild sunrays.
4. Most vegetables can be grown in winter depending on favourable conditions available eg tomatoes, beans, peas, carrot, capsicum, cabbage, cauliflower, mustard, all leafy vegetables, etc
An activity with children can be done to grow easily growing leafy vegetables like mustard, palak, etc.
